Microsoft’s leaked internal memo outlines an opt-in program allowing publishers to bring select Xbox 360 titles to PC, the upcoming Project Helix console, and handhelds through official backwards compatibility emulation.
The document emphasizes that publishers retain full control over rights, pricing, and Game Pass inclusion, with Microsoft handling the emulation work itself. Original Xbox and 360 games would join the existing PC program, following a staggered rollout with full original Xbox titles targeted for October 2026 and 360 games expected in waves throughout 2027 and 2028.
Disc-to-digital conversion for Xbox One and Series titles is also pitched as publisher-friendly with no required action from them, though everything hinges on voluntary participation rather than automatic support. This approach mirrors past limited backwards compatibility efforts where only a fraction of libraries received updates.
The plan aims to expand the Xbox ecosystem across devices but depends entirely on external approvals that could result in incomplete or delayed availability.
