The disc-to-digital rollout for Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One consoles has now reached the general public following a brief Insider testing phase that concluded with feedback-driven adjustments. A system update deployed in the early hours of September 30 automatically enabled the feature for many users, allowing supported physical discs to grant digital licenses upon insertion without further manual steps in most cases. Owners retain their physical copies while gaining access to benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud streaming where supported, though licenses remain tied to continued disc possession and can be revoked upon resale or transfer.
Insider feedback prompted refinements, including automatic claiming on disc read and options to disable auto-launch for bulk processing. A community database tracking compatibility currently lists around 1,860 titles, with 1,578 confirmed working, including some delisted games like Deadpool and Minecraft: Story Mode. SEGA and Ubisoft titles have seen recent additions or confirmations, though support varies by publisher and disc version, and Xbox One discs can unlock play on Series S consoles under the same account.
Xbox frames the initiative as part of broader game preservation efforts, noting that the physical disc continues to function normally after licensing. The feature launched for Insiders on August 31 with an initial pool of thousands of titles, expanding gradually since then.
Users can verify status via the Update Info tab or force a check through console restart if needed, with revoked licenses tracked in a dedicated list accessible through settings or browser.
