The Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering teams at Wizards of the Coast are now joining the United Wizards of the Coast-CWA union, expanding the organizing drive that began with the Magic: The Gathering Arena crew earlier this year. Workers are demanding an enforceable policy to halt the company's push for generative AI, alongside protections for remote work, sustainable workloads, fair compensation, layoff safeguards, and ownership of personal creative projects made outside company hours. Hasbro and Wizards leadership have until October 13 to voluntarily recognize the expanded unit covering D&D, D&D Beyond, tabletop Magic, and Duel Masters.

This follows the Arena team's successful union election in June, where workers won with an 83% vote after management missed an earlier voluntary recognition deadline and sent discouraging letters to staff. The petition explicitly calls out leadership for pushing LLMs and generative AI "without regard for the desires of our teams," arguing that workers deserve a robust policy aligned with their values. Magic Rules Manager Eric Levine emphasized that the people who make Magic deserve fair compensation and clear career progression.

Community reaction has been largely supportive on platforms like Reddit and X, with players signing petitions and voicing solidarity over past layoffs and corporate decisions at Hasbro. The union's official account reported strong early engagement, urging fans to sign their petition for voluntary recognition. If Hasbro declines again, another NLRB election looms for these tabletop teams, marking a significant escalation in labor organizing across one of gaming's most iconic studios.

While Wizards of the Coast has previously stressed direct relationships with employees, this expansion signals workers across multiple IPs refusing to be sidelined on issues like AI ethics and job security that directly impact the creative integrity of their games.
