Four years after a double Kickstarter smashed its ¥100 million goal to the tune of nearly ¥380 million, Armed Fantasia—the spiritual successor to Wild Arms led by series veteran Akifumi Kaneko—has been discontinued by publisher 505 Games and its parent Digital Bros. The September 2026 financial report lists the project alongside Directorate: Novitiate and a Battle Island sequel as titles killed after repeated gameplay revisions, shifting market conditions, and the extra investment required to finish them. A vertical slice with main scenario and core systems was submitted earlier this year, yet the plug was still pulled, leaving the ¥379 million in backer hopes and the long-dormant Wild Arms legacy in limbo.
Kaneko’s March 2026 Kickstarter update already carried the scent of strained relations, with the designer apologizing for missed schedules and noting his disclosures were “heavily influenced by the publisher’s strategy.” The original pitch had been shopped to Sony without success; 505 Games stepped in post-crowdfunding, only for the project to stall despite that early proof-of-concept build. Meanwhile, the campaign’s sibling project Penny Blood remains mired in its own publisher lawsuit over withheld Kickstarter funds, underscoring how these nostalgia-driven revivals often trade one set of problems for another.
The cancellation lands as a grim footnote in the cycle of 90s JRPG revivals: fan enthusiasm and millions raised, followed by delays, lawsuits, and quiet corporate write-offs totaling €17.6 million for Digital Bros’ discontinued slate. No word yet on backer refunds, asset fate, or whether another publisher might salvage the work. For now, the trail runs cold, and the wilderness stays empty.
