United Videogame Workers-CWA just opened the Game Worker Hardship Fund, a direct response to the industry's endless layoff cycle that has hammered US and Canadian studios since 2024. Grants run from $1,000 quick cash to $5,000 for rent, groceries, or medical bills, and you don't need a union card to apply — only proof of impact from the job cuts.
The union, which launched in 2025 as Local 9433 under the Communications Workers of America, funds the effort through member dues plus an itch.io bundle organized by Necrosoft Games. Applications get reviewed by volunteers on a needs basis, with the union admitting upfront that not every request will clear. This is the same outfit that has pushed for advance layoff notice, better severance, extended health coverage, and recall rights while studios chase short-term profits.
Layoffs remain a fixture, with recent reports hitting EA support teams, Kabam in LA, and Kwalee's Luna Abyss studio. The fund is a Band-Aid on a wound the industry keeps reopening, and workers are the ones stitching it together.
