Twitch just admitted what every streamer already knew: nobody wants their clips feeding Amazon’s AI meat grinder, so they hid the toggle and flipped it on by default. Chief product officer Mike Minton straight-up said it during a livestream — “If it was opt-in, nobody would opt in. That’s honestly the answer.”
Streamers are scrambling to the buried Security & Privacy settings to kill the “Training for Generative AI” option, but there’s a catch: opting out only protects your own channel. Chat in someone else’s stream and your messages can still get scraped unless they’ve turned it off too. That’s why the “aioptedout” tag is blowing up in directories so viewers know where it’s safe to type.
The backlash is loud across X, Reddit, and Twitch’s own UserVoice, where the top request to make AI features opt-in by default is sitting at over 15,000 votes. Twitch knows the community hates this. They just don’t care enough to change the default.
Your streams, VODs, chats — all of it is free training data unless you dig through the menus and flip the switch yourself. Classic Twitch: tell creators they’re not profitable, then quietly sell their content to the parent company’s AI division.
