Chris Roberts just admitted Squadron 42 is getting shoved to Q2 2027 because Rockstar's GTA 6 is about to turn every gaming outlet and content creator into a one-track hype machine. The man who crowdfunded a 12-year fever dream straight out of 2014 is now hiding behind the "attention buzz saw" like it's some unavoidable force of nature instead of the latest excuse in a parade of missed windows.

This was supposed to drop in Q4 2026 around IAE. Roberts spelled it out in his Letter from the Chairman: twelve years of blood, sweat, and tears on a spiritual Wing Commander sequel with Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, and the rest of the A-list cast aren't worth risking the media blackout that follows GTA 6's November console launch. Even though the game isn't hitting PC, Roberts figures the entire industry will be too busy chasing Rockstar's tail to notice his passion project.

Backers get a tiny October preview for a "small number" of creators and early supporters, then a firmer date "shortly after." Star Citizen itself just crossed a billion in crowdfunding while hawking a $5,000 ship that doesn't even exist yet, so the money printer is still humming. The real question is whether this latest delay is the last one or just another chapter in the eternal "it's coming soon" saga.

Roberts claims the game needs the wider world's full attention. After more than a decade of development and repeated slips, maybe it needs something else entirely—like actually shipping.
