Sony Interactive Entertainment President Hideaki Nishino has confirmed in a Famitsu interview that the company will press forward with live-service titles, emphasizing the need to keep providing ongoing content in a genre still finding its footing.
The remarks come amid a string of setbacks that include Concord's two-week shelf life before removal from sale, the shuttering of Bluepoint Games, cancellations at Bend Studio, and fresh Bungie layoffs that cut most of the Destiny 2 team along with a $765 million impairment on the $3.7 billion acquisition.
Helldivers 2 stands as the lone bright spot in the portfolio, having sold more than 15 million copies, while earlier Sony CFO comments noted the category created a revenue stream that did not exist five years prior.
Nishino stated the platform holder views live-service games as global-scale attractors and plans to revitalize the market with both first- and third-party efforts, including work on older titles over the medium to long term.
Single-player first-party games remain focused on PlayStation value, but live-service projects are eyed for broader PS5 and PC reach to maximize multiplayer participation.
