Brian Ward has stepped down as CEO of Savvy Games Group, the Saudi-backed entity that spent roughly $37.8 billion on game industry investments and acquisitions since its 2021 founding. He informed staff that the timing aligns with the company's next phase of transformational growth, a phrase that arrives just weeks after the Public Investment Fund led a $55 billion acquisition of Electronic Arts. Turqi Alnowaiser, deputy governor of the PIF and head of its international investments division, has taken over as interim acting CEO.
Ward oversaw major deals including the $4.9 billion purchase of Scopely and the $3.5 billion acquisition of Niantic, alongside stakes in Embracer, Take-Two, and Nintendo. Bloomberg reporting notes internal concern at Savvy over how the newly acquired EA assets will integrate with existing operations under the same Saudi ownership structure. The departure occurs as the PIF appears to be shifting toward more disciplined investing after aggressive expansion.
Interim leadership from within the PIF itself signals tighter oversight from Riyadh as the group absorbs its largest deal to date. The move follows Ward's prior roles at EA, Xbox, and Activision and comes amid broader management adjustments across the fund's portfolio.
