Jagex just pulled off the kind of console debut most indie survival games only dream about, shipping RuneScape: Dragonwilds to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC on September 15 with a claimed 1.5 million early-access sales already in the books. The UK studio built this one on Unreal Engine 5 as a co-op survival craft spin-off set on the new continent of Ashenfall, complete with skill-grinding, magic spells, dragon-slaying quests, and cross-play across every platform from day one. It also lands on Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium tiers, which explains some of the reach.

Early Access launched April 15, 2025, and racked up 600,000 sales in the first two weeks before climbing past one million by June 2026 and hitting the 1.5 million mark by full release, well above the company's internal 200,000-unit forecast. Steam reviews sit at Very Positive (81% from roughly 29,000–30,000 reviews), with recent concurrent peaks around 6,500–7,000 players and an all-time high near 18,000. The final Early Access update, Scorned Wilderness, concludes the Kuldra Saga raid while folding in every prior region and system for the console versions.

This marks the first RuneScape-branded title ever released on console after 25 years of the franchise staying PC-and-mobile only. Community chatter on X and Reddit shows a mix of surprise at the sales and cautious optimism about sustained updates, though no major launch-day server meltdown reports have surfaced yet. The multi-platform push and subscription-tier availability make this less a traditional “indie breakout” and more a calculated expansion play from a studio that finally decided its IP could travel beyond the PC niche.
