Capcom's animation director Hiroshi Yugen and his team didn't just motion-capture flashy sword swings for Onimusha: Way of the Sword. They opened with actual research into Miyamoto Musashi's historical techniques before stepping into the mocap suits at Katsugekiza Motion Capture Studio.

Yugen sat down with director Satoru Nihei and decided the core goal was grounded, realistic sword action from day one. That meant consulting choreographers who'd worked on films and dramas, briefing stunt actors on the game's mechanical rules—like approaching from specific angles—then recording, reviewing the temp takes in the upgraded RE Engine on the spot, and iterating until the director and the performers themselves were satisfied.

The result is an animation pipeline that treats Musashi's legendary duels with the weight they deserve instead of turning them into another stylish spectacle. When even the actors demand extra takes because the performance doesn't feel right, the commitment shows.

This is the kind of pre-production detail that separates a new entry from a nostalgic cash-in.
