Nexon just got handed the keys to Overwatch on PC in South Korea, starting August 12 alongside Season 4. Blizzard keeps development and the IP while Nexon runs live service, local events, and hyper-localized content tailored for Korean players through Nexon Korea.
Registration and account linking opened July 7, with players moving to Nexon accounts for the new service. Nexon CEO Junghun Lee called it a chance to deliver “best-in-class live operations and hyperlocalization,” while Blizzard SVP Walter Kong talked up the “high-quality, tailored experience” for the Korean community. The deal ties into Nexon’s recent Q1 results showing 118% net income growth, partly fueled by other live-service wins.
Korean players are split — some see potential for PC bang perks and region-specific stuff, others worry about isolation from global servers or account headaches with age verification. Nexon’s past regulatory fines in Korea add extra flavor to the handoff. This smells like Blizzard outsourcing the grind of keeping one market alive while it deals with bigger corporate pressures.
