A supermajority of the roughly 100 workers on Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering Arena team have committed to unionizing with the Communications Workers of America, filing an NLRB election petition while urging voluntary recognition by May 1. The move, announced April 27 via the official United Wizards of the Coast-CWA account on Reddit, stems from a pattern of decisions that prioritize short-term gains over long-term stability.

The workers outlined seven core demands: layoff protections amid ongoing fears of abrupt cuts; safeguards for remote work against Hasbro's impending blanket return-to-office mandate; explicit guidelines on generative AI usage, including the right to reject it when inappropriate; reasonable workload expectations to curb crunch; defined job roles and career paths; ownership rights over personal creative projects; and a shift toward sustainable game development over profit-chasing pivots. Senior software engineer Valentine Powell articulated the frustration: “There are a lot of times when these sort of decisions are made to chase a dollar rather than to think about what our product is going to look like ten years from now.”

This follows Hasbro's mass layoffs—two rounds axing around 2,000 employees (nearly a third of the company) in prior years, plus another 3% in 2025—and inconsistent RTO messaging now hardening into Seattle-local hiring only. The Arena team's push echoes broader CWA organizing in gaming, from Blizzard to Paizo.

Hasbro and Wizards have not commented. A public petition at actionnetwork.org/forms/uwotcletter calls for neutrality and recognition, with Reddit communities like r/MagicArena rallying support. The NLRB petition withdraws if management complies by close of business May 1. In an industry fond of shuffling decks, the workers are betting on a stronger hand.
