Insomniac's Marvel's Wolverine has landed with a 77-78 Metacritic average from over 100 reviews, the lowest score for a first-party PlayStation single-player game since Days Gone's 71 in 2019. Critics praised brutal combat and strong performances from Liam McIntyre as Logan but hammered repetitive action, a linear scope that feels dated next to Insomniac's own Spider-Man games, and heavy hand-holding that includes unskippable QTEs and objective markers.

The bigger noise, however, is the "fart gas" debate: a persistent blue scent trail representing Logan's tracking ability that reviewers and players cannot fully disable. Washington Post's Gene Park and others flagged it as one of several layers of signposting that treat players like they need constant guidance, echoing complaints about yellow paint and self-playing sequences in the campaign.

Insomniac marketing director James Stevenson clarified the trail only appears during specific story or collectible moments and isn't always active, but the option to toggle it off remains missing for many. With the game dropping September 15 on PS5 alone, sales will decide whether Sony treats this as a stumble or a full misfire.

A 77 isn't a disaster, but in the context of Sony's recent first-party output and Insomniac's own history, it's the kind of result that forces hard questions about direction and expectations.
