Hideo Kojima dropped the latest production update on PHYSINT during Xbox's Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast, confirming Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård as the lead protagonist.
Skarsgård joins previously announced cast members Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe in the action-espionage title, now fully under Xbox Game Studios publishing after PlayStation Studios walked away from the project in mid-June. Kojima described the move as a search for a partner sharing a common vision, while Sony framed it as a difficult decision amid reports citing budget concerns, missed deadlines, and profitability questions.
The director highlighted recent costume fittings, scans, and camera tests with Skarsgård and Fraser as giving him tremendous confidence, backed by a new poster he personally shot carrying the tagline "The Next Cold War Begins." Kojima called PHYSINT the culmination of his 40-year career and a project unbound by existing genres, though no platforms, release window, or gameplay details emerged.
Xbox and Kojima Productions already collaborate on the horror title OD, and the PHYSINT partnership extends to film and television ambitions.
