Microsoft's latest Xbox restructuring has left id Software with a statement that the remaining team matches the size from the Doom (2016) era. The official post notes the cuts were spread across teams and insists the studio retains the capacity for its signature games and id Tech work.
A Texas WARN filing confirmed 136 roles eliminated at the studio, with 96 at the Richardson office and 40 remote positions. Earlier reporting from anonymous sources had described deeper impacts on the engine team and fears that id Tech maintenance could be compromised.
Xbox has pushed back on the most extreme claims, stating dozens of people continue working on id Tech across locations. id Software highlighted its flat structure and plans to appear at QuakeCon in August.
Rumors of relegation to support studio status or a shift away from the proprietary engine persist in community discussions despite the official clarification.
