Casey Bloys just threw Craig Mazin under the bus in the politest way possible. The HBO boss told Deadline at the Emmys afterparty that he thinks the showrunner "has planned it as the final season," making Season 3 the likely end of the road. This directly contradicts Mazin's own May 2025 Collider comments insisting there's "no way" to wrap the story in three seasons and that a fourth was the most likely outcome.

Bloys has been singing the same tune since January, when he said "it certainly seems that way" about Season 3 being the finale. Now that the third season is confirmed for a 2027 premiere and is adapting the back half of The Last of Us Part II from Abby's perspective, the network seems ready to call it. The more divided reaction to Season 2 and Neil Druckmann stepping away to focus on Naughty Dog's games probably didn't help the case for dragging things out either.

Mazin is already juggling Baldur's Gate 3 adaptation duties, so maybe the math just works better this way. Either way, the boss has spoken and the franchise on HBO looks like it's wrapping up sooner than the showrunner originally pitched.
