Double Fine Productions has regained full ownership of its intellectual property and publishing rights following its separation from Xbox Game Studios earlier this year. CEO Tim Schafer confirmed on the Kinda Funny Games podcast that the transfer includes titles developed during the studio's seven years under Microsoft, such as Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln, though some storefront listings still reference Microsoft while processing completes.

The move comes after Double Fine and Compulsion Games were among studios spun out during Xbox's July restructuring that eliminated over 3,200 positions across the division. Double Fine subsequently cut 23 roles, or about 25 percent of its staff, to reach a sustainable size, with Schafer noting that only the studio's survival prompted such steps.

Double Fine is marking its return to independence with the fifth Amnesia Fortnight game jam, launching via Kickstarter on August 31, where backers will help select prototypes for potential small projects. Schafer emphasized that purchases of the studio's games now directly support its operations and runway.

This outcome allows Double Fine to retain control of its catalog and revenue streams as it operates independently once more.
