Blackout alpha is here to turn the fastest demon-slaying engine in gaming into a methodical breaching simulator, and the result looks like someone glued Crysis armor onto a funeral dirge. PKmX’s WIP mod for Zandronum and UZDoom replaces Doom’s frantic movement with cover-hugging, real-firearm ballistics, ADS, proper reloads, and a fragile player who dies if they sneeze wrong. Enemies hit harder but wind up slower, gunfire pulls aggro, and quiet play lets you ghost past hordes—classic Doom monsters turned into tactical threats instead of speed bumps.
The nanosuit rip-off gives you a shield, near-death speed boost, and temporary cloaking that actually works, which explains why footage feels more STALKER than old-school slaughter. No inventory tetris either—the modder explicitly wants combat, not spreadsheet management. Download’s live on Doomworld, and the dev recommends darker palette tweaks to sell the grim atmosphere.
PC Gamer called the demo “terrifying” and admitted tactical Doom might actually slap. The mod’s already drawing classes and co-op focus, so Zandronum servers are about to get a lot slower and a lot louder when someone screws up a breach.
