Matthew Mercer and Sam Riegel lending their voices to Rockbeasts is the kind of announcement that makes the whole rock-management premise suddenly feel less like a gimmick and more like a vehicle for actual character work. Lichthund's Bartosz Pieczonka has been candid that the Polish studio's niche management RPG needed this kind of creative and publishing lift from Critical Role to escape the "game we had to settle for" stage and become the version they always wanted. The partnership puts the tabletop veterans on both sides of the curtain, co-publishing alongside the developer and injecting two of their most chaos-prone performers into the cast of an alternate-1990s grunge band saga already featuring Iggy Pop and writers from The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.

Rockbeasts has wandered a winding road to this point. Originally announced under Team17 in 2025 with a same-year target, the project parted ways with that publisher in mid-2026 before Critical Role stepped in as co-publisher last month, bringing with it the narrative muscle and voice talent that lets Lichthund push the hand-drawn, dialogue-heavy vision further. The game casts players as the manager rather than the frontman, juggling resources, egos, literal and figurative fires, and branching story beats across a cast of anthropomorphic misfits trying to climb from garage obscurity to stadium lights. Seventeen original grunge tracks and rhythm-infused performance segments round out the MTV-era fantasy.

The January 2027 PS5 launch window, alongside PC, Xbox Series, and Switch, now arrives with far more weight behind it than the indie project originally carried. Critical Role's involvement signals a bet that heartfelt, unhinged storytelling can make a management sim about band logistics feel like the next best thing to sitting in on an actual campaign. Whether the resulting mix of ego-wrangling spreadsheets and punk-voice performances lands as genius or glorified spreadsheet theater remains to be seen when the demo hits Steam and the full game drops early next year.
