Cloud Imperium Games has pushed Squadron 42 out to Q2 2027, with CEO Chris Roberts explicitly citing the need to sidestep the media saturation around Grand Theft Auto 6.
The single-player campaign, in development since 2014 and pitched as a spiritual successor to Wing Commander with voice work from Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis, and Henry Cavill, was most recently targeted for Q4 2026 following a 2024 CitizenCon announcement. Roberts noted in the official letter that GTA 6’s November console launch will dominate coverage across outlets and creators, leaving insufficient space for other titles, and a small group of original backers will receive access in October for further announcements.
Star Citizen itself crossed the $1 billion crowdfunding mark earlier this year while remaining in perpetual alpha, and the Squadron 42 delay represents another adjustment in a project that has seen multiple prior shifts since its initial 2015 target.
Roberts described the move as the best decision for the project to secure wider attention, with the new window positioned in early 2027 after internal review of release slots.
