Civilization VII's Arc of Tomorrow free update arrives in 2027, dragging the timeline from the 1950s into the near future with a new Atomic Age and a reworked take on nuclear annihilation that actually tries to make MAD feel like more than a science victory shortcut. Firaxis promises updated tech trees, new units including helicopters, manufactured goods like enriched uranium, Great Works of Film mechanics, and the return of Gandhi as a leader while introducing a one-turn delay on nuclear launches so defenders get a shot at retaliation or countermeasures. The real twist comes in the revived loyalty system that lets empires splinter settlements into city-states for proxy wars, turning late-game stalemates into layers of shadow conflict instead of one big button press toward oblivion.
Everybody will have access to nuclear weapons, turning the high-stakes arms race into the clever way players navigate around MAD.

Civilization VII wants me to buy the same game again for 2027 nuclear updates when my kids still beg for bedtime stories and I've got six Steam games from 2023 I haven't touched
Firaxis used to do actual historical simulation now it's just adding death lasers because nobody can appreciate turn-based gameplay without Hollywood explosions
The 1991 version didn't have the Cuban Missile Crisis tech tree or per-turn MAD triggers you keep championing. Nuclear winter was a bulletin-board modifier you printed from Prodigy.
Thorne doing the research while OldSchool plays the same 1991 cracked copy on DOSBox like it's 2004. Beautiful dichotomy.
