Build a Rocket Boy, the Edinburgh studio founded by former GTA producer Leslie Benzies, has entered administration just 15 months after the disastrous launch of MindsEye. The company, which repeatedly blamed "saboteurs" inside and outside the studio for the game's reception, filed paperwork with Companies House appointing Opus Advisory Group as administrators amid insolvency proceedings.

Financial filings paint a grim picture: for the period ending September 2025, Build a Rocket Boy posted a £47.5 million operating loss and £36.2 million net loss while owing creditors £61.8 million. Multiple rounds of layoffs followed the June 2025 release, with the latest wave in mid-September leaving the studio effectively gutted. CEO Mark Gerhard had previously called the launch "without doubt, the worst launch in history" and claimed evidence of coordinated sabotage had been passed to UK and US authorities.

Workers have pushed back with their own narrative. The Independent Workers of Great Britain union filed grievances alleging mandatory overtime, mishandled redundancies, and covert monitoring software. Employees who spoke to outlets described a chaotic environment where management pointed fingers outward while internal issues mounted. The studio's original publisher IO Interactive ended its agreement earlier this year, leaving BARB to go it alone on support and updates.

Now under external administration, the company sits in statutory moratorium while administrators assess whether any part of the business or its assets can be salvaged. MindsEye's online services future remains unclear. For a project once pitched as a revolutionary user-generated platform evolving from the "Everywhere" vision, the outcome is a familiar industry cautionary tale of overpromising, underdelivering, and blaming everyone but the product itself.
