Digital Bros has pulled the plug on Armed Fantasia, the Wild Arms spiritual successor that raised nearly ¥380 million on a 2022 double Kickstarter alongside Penny Blood. The announcement came buried in the publisher's FY2026 financials, listing it among projects discontinued after repeated gameplay revisions failed to convince the parent company of its commercial potential. Lead designer Akifumi Kaneko, the former Wild Arms producer behind the project, had delivered a vertical slice in March 2026 only for it to be discarded months later.

The cancellation hits harder because the campaign was never meant to fully fund the game. Backers pledged for proof-of-concept demos to attract a traditional publisher, and 505 Games did step in—yet the same corporate calculus that killed Directorate: Novitiate and a Battle Island sequel claimed this one too. Sony reportedly passed on the pitch years earlier, leaving the project reliant on a mid-tier Western publisher that ultimately valued quarterly write-offs over completing a turn-based Westernpunk JRPG with Cross Order Tactics combat.

Penny Blood's parallel troubles—ongoing lawsuits over withheld Kickstarter funds and no publisher—now look like the canary for the entire effort. Neither spiritual successor reached players despite the money, the names, and the updates. Four years of development notes and vertical slices end in an €17.6 million impairment line item that says more about risk tolerance than it does about the games themselves.
