Amazon Games has quietly terminated its Lord of the Rings MMO project, announced with much fanfare in 2023 alongside Embracer Group.
The development team reportedly shrank to just three people before being reassigned to New World updates and then laid off entirely, according to sources familiar with the project. No public explanation for the decision was offered, though internal memos indicate a broader halt to first-party AAA MMO efforts.
Jeffrey Gattis, Amazon Games general manager, offered the standard corporate non-response: the team continues to explore a compelling new Middle-earth experience in close collaboration with the IP holders. This latest pivot follows multiple prior cancellations and layoffs across the division.
The pattern is familiar and entirely predictable at this scale.
