Amazon has shelved its Lord of the Rings MMO after quietly moving roughly 1,000 developers from the New World team onto the project in the months before last October's company-wide layoffs.

The internal memo from vice president Steven Boom confirmed the halt on "a significant amount of our first-party AAA game development work – specifically around MMOs," while New World itself is now scheduled to shut down on 31 January 2027.

Head of games Jeff Grattis offered the usual corporate non-answer, stating the team continues to explore "a compelling new game experience" in Middle-earth and remains "excited about the IP," which is to say the layoffs claimed another ambitious title and left only skeleton crews maintaining existing services like Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty.

Former developers posted farewells noting they had "would have loved it," and all references vanished from the Amazon Game Studios site by mid-October 2025, confirming what the October cuts had already made obvious to anyone paying attention.
