Alpha Dog Games is back under founding ownership after Microsoft shuttered the studio in May 2024 alongside Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks. Founder Shawn Woods confirmed the mobile specialist has regained independent control of its name and assets, crediting Microsoft for facilitating a smooth transition. The team has already sunk months into updating its Unity-based engine framework, the same one that powered Mighty Doom.

Woods said the studio is fielding conversations with partners, publishers, and licensors but has no specific projects to announce yet. Microsoft has run five rounds of layoffs since the Activision Blizzard merger, including another 3,200 roles confirmed this year. Anonymous sources told Game Developer that key studios are struggling post-cuts. Alpha Dog's return shows founders can claw assets back when the parent company moves on.
